Somali-Masai birds in Uganda’s Mount Moroto

Today we celebrate Birding ‘Global Big Day’ with fantastic sighting of Crammy Wanyama around Mountain Moroto during his current stay at Kara-Tunga, Karamoja Safari Camp. These photos are of the White-crested Turaco and Shinning Sunbird.

Day 1

Crammy Wanyama: “Mountain Moroto is where we spent another great birding day. This place has unique habitats that it does not share with the rest of the country. They favour an impressive collection of the Somali-Masai biome bird species. Birding this area is a whole new adventure for one who has only covered the traditional Uganda birding tour that traverses the central, southwestern and western parts of the country. While exploring Mountain Moroto’s southern rocky slopes, acacia and broad-leaved woodlands, we added a couple of incredible birds that included the Orange River (Archer’s) Francolin, Wahlberg’s Honeyguide, Grey Wren-warbler, Uncommon Hemprich’s Hornbill and The restricted-range African Citril.”

Day 2

Crammy Wanyama: Today is Global Bird Day! With initial team of three, Henry from Cleveland, Peter from Moroto of Uganda and myself, had a significant moment in the Mountain Moroto for the morning. We saw a couple of lovely birds of this area among which included the uncommon Hemprich’s Hornbill and The restricted-range African Citril.

In the afternoon, we visited the Karamajong (one of the Ugandan tribes) community for a cultural experience; we were able to interest them into watching the birds and had the kids help out point every bird that flew around. It was an excellent and very relaxed mix.

After walking around, we joined into a cultural daily late afternoon entertainment session. Here is a video of our extensive team during the dance while we had a little break.
