Today we’ve been flagged-off from Uganda for the Ateker Peace Caravan 2022 to our homeland Ethiopia! We are on our mission to reunite across borders.
Elders, youth, opinion leaders, political leaders, cultural leaders and tourism actors from Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan and Ethiopia will congregate to foster sustainable peace, celebrate our shared cultural heritage and promote cross-border development. The congregation is taking place in Kangaten Ethiopia during the inaugural Nyangatom Cultural Festival.
The Ateker
The Ateker community is a composition of the greater Karamoja cluster which includes (Karamojong, Turkana, Toposa, Teso, Nyangatom, and Jiye found in four Eastern African states of Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan, and Uganda. They also include some other minority indigenous groups and inhabitants that occupy the same area mountains and borderlands (Ik, Tepes, Kadama).

Unlocking Ateker borders to foster cultural exchange and peaceful coexistence and Development.
Objectives
To commemorate the peaceful coexistence ushered by Nyangatom, Hamer, Dassanech and Turkana in Kibish/ Nakuwa river – a resource-sharing river at the borders.
To bring together the Ateker people of Karamoja, Iteso, Turkana, Toposa, Jiye, and Nyangatom to celebrate the reunion and call for cultural peace across the clans through sports for peace.
To promote cultural tourism among the Karamoja culture through miss Ateker events

Travel Route
The Nyangatom administration with the Turkana coordination team advised that all Ateker participants will be allowed to pass through the Kibish Border to enter Kangaten. The routes are safe, peaceful and well manned by the Turkana and Nyangatom pastoralist.
