14th October 2024, Moroto – Karamoja Conservation Zones Initiative under Kara-Tunga is recruiting an Agroforestry Area Coordinator to work in the Northern Karamoja sub-region of Uganda. Knowledge and experience working on projects and supervising extension workers in the field of Agroforestry and Vegetable Farming.
Position title: Agroforestry Area Coordinator Duty Station: Moroto, Nakapiripirit, Kaabong or Karenga District. Contract: 1 Year wherefrom 3 months probation. Reports to: Project Manager, M&E Manager. Responsibility: Growing of trees, supervise Lead Farmers. Language requirement: NgaKarimojong Education and experience: At least 3 years of hands-on experience in tree nursery management, vegetable farming, irrigation, and agroforest planting. A relevant degree or diploma is required. Knowledge and experience in Apiary is at an advantage. Key relationship: Lead Farmers, Implementing Partners. Workload: 6 Days a Week.
Background
Kara-Tunga Arts and Tours (Kara-Tunga) is a Ugandan social enterprise which aims at fostering peace, prosperity and conservation of natural and cultural resources through eco-tourism development in Uganda’s northeastern Karamoja sub-region. KTF is funded through tourism activities (conservation levies as part of accommodation packages, community development fees linked to excursions, etc.), grants from donors and donations from well-wishers. Kara-Tunga partners with organized community groups will support programs focusing on education, conservation and promotion of livelihoods.
Karamoja Conservation Zones
The Karamoja sub-region in Uganda is rapidly developing and, as a result at risk of deforestation and land degradation because of mining, agricultural expansion and charcoal and firewood production. The sub-region needs effective conservation and reforestation interventions. The Central Forest Reserves (CFRs), Wildlife Reserves and National Parks, specifically, have been identified as restoration hotspots. The Karamoja Conservation Zones initiative of Kara-Tunga attends to this potential by developing and scaling a model for ‘buffer zones’ at the borders of these areas, where reforestation and conservation efforts take place. As well as support of Community Conservation Enterprises like Ecotourism, Beekeeping and Agroforestry.
Responsibilities
Conducting field visits to the Area where you are in operations to identify and resolve problems.
Implement activities at the Area and field level by the approved work plan and budget.
Planning, budgeting, reporting and accounting for the facilitation of field activities i.e., provision of materials, feeding and transport costs. and accountability of field activities
Conduct action research, as required and document the process and key findings.
Registering and Monitoring nurseries and planting sites.
Supervise and instruct Lead Farmers to organize environmental sensitization in the local community and to make the community aware of the importance of tree planting.
Organize with the help of the Lead Farmers to distribute seeds and materials to the different areas of operation.
Organize workshops and meetings at the District level with support from Project Manager.
Facilitate planning and establishing community nurseries and demonstration plots.
Initiate and implement meeting sessions with the leaders of farmer groups for experience sharing.
Coordinate with Lead Farmers and other key stakeholders in planning and implementing field-level activities in a coordinated way.
Participate in relevant events organized by other Implementing Partners and stakeholders at the District level.
Coordinate with district government line agencies, local NGOs, media, and private sector and other relevant networks for greater learning of new ideas, lessons learned and good practices.
Perform other duties within the company as required by Management.
Qualifications and requirements
At least 3 years of hands-on (proven) experience in tree nursery management, tree growing and management, monitoring of survival rate, vegetable farming, vegetable irrigation, and agroforest planting models.
A relevant degree or diploma is required. Knowledge and experience in Apiary is at an advantage.
Fluent verbal capacity in NgaKarimojong and also knowledge and experience working in the Karamoja sub-region with farmer groups and stakeholders implementing similar activities.
The ability to work, cooperate with farmer groups and work on your own with minimum supervision.
You should be good in verbal and good in written communication, time management, ability to prioritize work attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
Proven experience in activity report writing, activity budgeting and delivery of financial accountabilities.
Valid Ugandan Motorbike Drivers License.
Availability for work from November 2024.
Travel Required
You will be travelling within the district on a motorbike.
