During the Visitor Flow Analysis Workshop held from April 22-24, 2024, KATHA members made a strategic decision to revitalize the association as a key action point for the successful implementation of the Karamoja Destination Management Plan (DMP). This workshop resulted in the development of a draft vision, goal, and objectives that will guide KATHA’s formalization process.
KATHA, which was formed in 2022, faces the significant challenge of covering the entire Karamoja sub-region, an area roughly the size of Belgium. This vast territory encompasses nine districts, each with its own unique tourism attractions and challenges.
Vision
Karamoja will be an unforgettable destination for authentic experiences where people and nature thrive.
Goal
Improve the collaboration between the private, public and community sectors for the implementation and monitoring of the DMP.
Objectives
To effectively address the needs of such a diverse region, KATHA is working to strengthen its organizational structure and expand its reach. This includes:
Establishing regional chapters: KATHA plans to establish regional chapters within each district, allowing for more localized representation and decision-making.
Building capacity: KATHA is providing training and capacity-building opportunities for its members, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to effectively represent the tourism industry.
Strengthening partnerships: KATHA is forging partnerships with government agencies, conservation organizations, and international development partners to enhance its impact and resources.
Interim Committee Formation
A key outcome of the revitalization meeting held during the DMP workshop was the formation of an interim committee tasked with spearheading the formalization of KATHA by the end of 2024. This committee will play a crucial role in developing the association’s constitution, bylaws, and membership criteria.
The interim committee will also be responsible for organizing the first official KATHA general assembly, where members will elect the association’s leadership and set its priorities for the coming year.
Conclusion
The revitalization of KATHA is a crucial step in ensuring that the tourism industry in Karamoja is well-represented and supported. By strengthening its organization and expanding its reach, KATHA can play a vital role in promoting sustainable tourism development and improving the livelihoods of local communities.
As KATHA continues to evolve, it is committed to working closely with its members and partners to create a more vibrant and sustainable tourism industry in Karamoja.
