Day 75, 8480km, Roadtrip through Karamoja; Moroto, Karamoja. In the last few days, we have found ourselves in the little known, relatively undiscovered and exceptionally beautiful North East of Uganda in a province called Karamoja.
Karamoja suffers from a negative image due to decades of isolation and insecurity and sees very little tourism or travel. Though at peace since 2011 when the Ugandan Government disarmed local factions, the area is still avoided by Ugandans and the international community due to misguided fear.
Positively impacting the image of Uganda #RealAfrica
This is a smaller scale example of what we are trying to change with Roadtrip through Kararomoja; misconceptions about our continent. Discover Karamoja are trying to do the same thing and have established themselves to positively change the image of Karamoja.
Along with our new friend Theo, founder of Discover Karamoja, we explored about 21kms of Mount Moroto . We found that, not only are the people friendly and welcoming but the untouched landscapes are stunning and unique. Another great example of the #RealAfrica we encounter on our Roadtrip through Karamoja.
Hiking Mount Moroto
Often the best and always the most affordable adventures are found far from the main road. This was definitely the case in the hidden gem of Uganda’s Karamoja province. On the slopes of Mount Moroto, we uncover the environmental and cultural secrets of Uganda’s last frontier.
Some great hiking training for Mount Kenya! Now we just need to make a decision on whether to take the chance in this poor weather, to hike or not to hike? See the video:
A local Karamojan youth in partial traditional dress with his bike. Until Idi Amin the locals in the area wore nothing but a headress made of human hair decorated with feathers. It is now illegal to enter town naked so many have adopted the Masai blankent.
Traveling with our new friend, Uwa, who we met at Sipi Falls. Uwa is a climber from Cape Town and has been travelling for more than a year now.
The team from Discover Karamoja who we hiked the 21kms with.
Following Uwa on our way to Moroto.
Forging a new path down the mountains
Playing Emwezu, a game of cattle and crawls that the people in the villages play. This game board was set up with the beautiful scenery of the mountains. We couldn’t resist but stop for a game.
Ekeru (Two story hut) built on a big rock in the valley of Mount Morojo.
Mama Lokiru is the grandmother to a family living in the mountains.
Looking into Kenya and can almost see the shores of Lake Turkana.
Shane, looking down at the ground and blinded by his peak-cap, walked into a broken tree branch. Small cut to the scalp but lots of blood. Tarryn in the background ready to clean up the mess.
Just another roadblock in the #RealAfrica ;). More common than police or anything else, animals are the true rulers of the African roads.
