Birders have featured Northeastern Karamoja sub-region as ‘Undiscovered Outback of Uganda‘ and ‘A truly unique birding Environment’ due to the magnificent scenery, remarkable tribal cultures, birds and wildlife that you won’t see elsewhere in Uganda.
(East-Africa) Endemic
“Where there is a Fox’s Weaver there is a Karamoja Apalis, where there is a Karamoja Apalis there is a Fox’s Weaver.” Fox’s Weaver is Uganda’s only endemic bird species and Karamoja Apalis is endemic to East Africa. Both inhabitants of wooded grasslands dominated by the Whistling-thorn Acacia, favored for nesting and feeding.
Resident birds
While exploring Mountain Moroto’s southern rocky slopes, acacia and broad-leaved woodlands, we added a couple of incredible birds that included the Orange River (Archer’s) Francolin, Wahlberg’s Honeyguide, Grey Wren-warbler, Uncommon Hemprich’s Hornbill and The restricted-range African Citril.”
Unique habitat
Bird Watching on Mount Moroto and the surroundings provide an impressive collection of the Somali-Masai biome bird species. Birding this area is a whole new adventure for one who has only covered the traditional Uganda birding tour that traverses the central, southwestern and western parts of the country.
Birds of Karamoja, sightings
Birds in Uganda’s Northeastern Karamoja has guaranteed bird sightings including Yellow-necked Spur fowl, Red-winged Lark, Black-throated Barbet, Grey-wren Warbler, Yellow-spotted Petronia and Purple Grenadier.
With luck and the help of our experienced Kara-Tunga birding guides, there’s a chance of viewing the Shoebill, Fox’s Weaver and Karamoja Apalis.

Brian Lokutae is a son of the soil and indigenous inhabitant of Moroto and the Karamoja sub-region at large. His passion for birding has attracted the attention of Uganda national birding elite and is one of the greatest promoters of birding in Uganda’s Northeastern and Moroto in particular.
