We are starting a new sweet journey to build the Kara-Tunga Honey Brand from the bottom up, and we would like you to be a part of it.
Background
The Kara-Tunga community partners, especially the Ik and Tepeth, are famous in Uganda for producing quality honey. However, the bee-keepers lack access to the market and therefore sell honey for below market price. Kara-Tunga Honey will specifically focus on local value addition and developing an iconic local honey brand.
Starting the journey
Last week, our apiary team—Peter, Ben, and Maria—visited local honey farmers in four different areas of Karamoja, introducing ourselves. This region’s honey is high in quality and unique in taste, but farmers need a market. We’re here for that, offering a product with a storyline, and a chance for small farmers to thrive on different levels. Our core belief? Ownership empowers. We challenge the conventional approach of NGOs, emphasizing that too much goodwill can sometimes be counterproductive.
Beyond making tasty honey, our goal is regeneration. We know bees matter—they help biodiversity and secure our food system. They even protect farms from wildlife crop raids! We’re spreading the word on honey benefits, hoping to inspire farmers to preserve and grow their environment more effectively.
Malaika Honey and Kara Tunga Foundation officially opened the Karamoja sub-regional Honey Center in Moroto town. The centre is aimed at promoting beekeeping as a viable business and incentivising environmental conservation.
