The Karamoja region in Northestern Uganda has a high demand for skilled people in the tourism industry. The region possesses unique tourist attractions, which are attracting many hotels and lodges. Unfortunately, the current training options in tourism and hospitality don’t satisfy the demand for qualified personnel in these places. Lodge managers’ experience that the current training options in the region put too much focus on theory and pay little attention to the development of practical skills and required attitudes.
The Karamoja Tourism Academy aims to create increased employment opportunities in the tourism sector for youth in the Karamoja region. By the end of 2019, the initiative foresees to train and mentor at least 20 youth (of which is at least 50% girls and young women from the Karamoja region in marketable skills relevant to the hospitality industry (housekeeping, hospitality, catering). The process of training and mentoring is geared at supporting them to find meaningful employment in the hotel and tourism sector.
The Karamoja Tourism Academy foresees to achieve this objective by working closely together with private sector players in the hotel and tourism sector (lodges, hotels, resorts, tour companies) in the Karamoja region. These parties will contribute to both the development and implementation of a market orientated curriculum for skills development by hosting the trainees.
