Tuesday 23 April marked the day that Ukarimu Academy finally launched the roll-out of its COVID-19 resilience training program with Karamoja Tourism Academy as implementing partner for Northeastern Uganda!
Karamoja Tourism Academy
This program will be the third training cycle for the Karamoja Tourism Academy focused on improving the quality of service and creating meaningful job opportunities in the Karamoja sub-region of Northeastern Uganda. This program involves all departments in the hospitality and tourism sector: from tourism entrepreneurs and site guides to hotel staff.
The pandemic has given an opportunity to scale-up skills
Herbert Byaruhanga, the chairperson of the Hospitality and tourism sector skills council in Uganda, says it would be impossible for Uganda to make a reasonable comeback amidst heightening global competitiveness. This surely cannot happen without sharpening the skills of various actors in the sector. He also added that the global COVID-19 pandemic has given Uganda an opportunity to scale its human resources skills. Most Ugandans have academic qualifications with no matching practical skills, making them uncompetitive: both regionally and globally. Time to change that!
CEO, Uganda Hotel Owners Association
Maximize chances of returning to job
According to the Uganda Hotel Owners’ Association, an estimated number of 400.000 people have lost their job as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, in the hotel sector alone.. But that will not discourage us because at Ukarimu, we strongly believe that through skilling the young Ugandans in domains that are considered crucial by their former employees, we can still maximize their chances of returning to their jobs and position the sector for effective recovery!
UKARIMU Academy, Implementing team
