Since our humble beginnings, we’ve have been engaged in Community Tourism Development in the Karamoja region and Mount Moroto in specific. An important part of our Community Tourism Development process is the development of community projects. This process starts with assessing the opportunities for community tourism and which challenges the communities share that can be supported by the proceeds of tourism.
Our first touch point are the lower local leaders that are important connection with the outside world for especially remote communities.
This year we started the Community Tourism Development process with the community of the western sub-counties of Mountain Moroto. We already hire local porters, employ local youth as tour guides and work together with a selected amount of homesteads along our routes. But we are now exploring the possibility for the community of the mountain to benefit as a whole.
The local leaders shared their challenges and together we selected four main areas: 1) infrastructure challenging access to education centres 2) raising of school fees / scholastic materials for primary education 3) access to healthcare facilities 4) animal welfare.
The coming weeks we’re sharing this challenges with respected institutions and we already found out that programs are in process addressing some challenges 1) Government has disbursed funds to build a Secondary School for the Tepeth-community in Moroto: http://bit.ly/2Hiq08s 4) Vétérinaires Sans Frontières in Moroto has funded the treatment for the current Pneumonia disease affecting the respected communities.
As Kara-Tunga we are looking into ways to support the community through proceeds of tourism within our capacity and with advice of respected authorities. We’re looking forward to sharing more of our activities.
