2nd March 2023, Moroto – Karamoja Conservation Zones Initiative under the Kara-Tunga Foundation is recruiting Agroforestry Parish Coordinators to work in the Karamoja sub-region of Uganda.
Position title: Agroforestry Parish Coordinator
Duty Station: Karenga, Kaabong, Moroto and Nakapiripirit Districts
Contract: 1 Year
Report to: District Coordinators
Responsibility: To manage and supervise extension workers and project activities.
Key relationship: Program Manager, Director, Finance, M&E
Position summary
The parish coordinators/intern’s role will be supervising the extension workers while in their own communities, training community-based parish coordinators/interns is vital; it motivates the community to collaborate with Kara-Tunga and Kijani as the parish coordinators are derived from the community.
Any community worker is expected to be knowing the local language (Ngakarimojong), and should be having excellent knowledge of the locality, an impeccable and reliable standing among the community and knowledge about the local traditions and governing system.
Parish coordinators will be in charge of coordinating the extension workers, monitor, conducting meetings and making reports about the projects work. should be aware of requirements and dynamics of local people to ensure project programs are based upon the local felt need.
Background
Kara-Tunga Foundation (KTF) is a Ugandan not-for-profit organization which aims at fostering peace, prosperity and conservation of natural and cultural resources through eco-tourism development in Uganda’s northeastern Karamoja sub-region. KTF is funded through tourism activities (conservation levies as part of accommodation packages, community development fees linked to excursions, etc.), grants from donors and donations from well-wishers. KTF partners with organized community groups will support programs focusing on education, conservation and promotion of livelihoods.
Kijani Forestry Ltd is a social enterprise with headquarter in Gulu City, and its mission is to combat deforestation by facilitating climate smart agricultural practices that empower farmers for local economic development. Kijani is rolling out commercial smallholder and large-scale sustainable charcoal farming using a proprietary innovative climate smart agroforestry approach in the Acholi and Lango Sub-Region and parts of Karamoja Region. KTF is in a partnership with Kijani forestry in forestry interventions and will continue supporting KTF in fields of tree planning, training farmers and marketing for the farmers produce.
Project Summary
The Karamoja sub-region in Uganda is rapidly developing and, as a result at risk of deforestation and land degradation because of mining, agricultural expansion and charcoal and firewood production. The sub-region is in need of effective conservation and reforestation interventions. Mt Moroto and Mt Kadam Central Forest Reserves (CFRs), specifically, have been identified as restoration hotspots. The Karamoja Conservation Zones initiative of Kara-Tunga Foundation (KTF) attends to this potential by developing and scaling a model for ‘buffer zones’ at the border of CFRs, starting at Mt Moroto and Kadam. The model consists of ‘core zones’ which are located within the community and adjacent to the protected area(s). The core zones are surrounded by a larger buffer zone, in which reforestation and conservation efforts take place. Ecotourism and Sustainable Forest-based businesses within the CFR and agroforestry activities take place in the community land. The core zones will be developed as hubs for nursery beds, training and tourist centers.
Responsibilities
Identify register groups, spots for Nursery hub establishment, supervise and monitor group activities.
Mobilize the groups for training in nursery activities and training farmers in nursery establishment, tree planting, charcoal production. technologies and best practices in crop production.
Guide farmers in woodlot establishment, ensure maintenance of existing woodlots and monitor the survival rate of the trees planted including pruning for timber or other trees and supervise distribution of assorted tree species.
Generate beneficiary lists in the community including suitable candidates for the internship program, recruit community coordinators and provide accountability to branch coordinator and finance.
Preparing and submitting daily updates using established M&E tools.
Qualifications
Minimum of a Uganda certificate of Education.
Knowledge on nursery bed establishment, tree planting, charcoal production technologies and best practices in crop production.
The ability to work, cooperate with the community, work on your own with minimum supervision.
You should be good verbal and good in written communication, time manager, ability to prioritize work and attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
Travel Required
The parish coordinators will be travelling within the two districts to monitor the progress of the project’s activities.
